Become a Part of OHRG
The Ohio Roller Girls (OHRG) are seeking self-motivated, hardworking,
athletic women who possess a positive attitude. Must be 19 or older. No
previous formal training is required; however one must display strong
basic skating skills. If you do not skate on a regular basis, you
should start doing so immediately, as well as continuing an off-skate
training regimen.Being a part of OHRG takes a large time commitment; all OHRG
members are expected to attend multiple practices each week—as well as
volunteer for promotional and fundraising events.
If you make the team, you’ll need to purchase your own quad skates and protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet and mouthguard), as well as pay monthly dues in order to be eligible to participate. Also, in roller derby, we like to, “It’s not if you get hurt, it’s when you get hurt,” so we highly recommend health insurance if you don’t already have coverage.
Below are a few tips to help prepare you for the intense physical activity that roller derby demands.

Below are a few tips to help prepare you for the intense physical activity that roller derby demands.
- Skate as much as you can! You can do this by going to rinks like Skate Zone 71 and/or United Skates of America. For open-skate times and locations, check www.usa-skating.com. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate basic skating skills, such as balancing on one foot, doing crossovers through the corners, turning around without stopping, and squatting while skating.
- Get in shape! Being an Ohio Roller Girl means being an athlete, so start living like one. You should be working out a minimum of four times a week (both on and off skates), eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, minimizing partying, and getting a good night’s sleep. Take care of yourself now, and don’t be afraid to talk to a health or fitness professional to learn what’s right for you.
- Buy your own equipment! You won’t want to wear someone else’s stinky, sweaty hand-me-downs. The best pads are usually available for purchase online only. However, you can usually find a decent “starter set” at a local skate shop or sporting-goods store. (Just remember: You get what you pay for.)
- Stay informed! Visit our website and join our message board to stay up-to-date on important OHRG events. Watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T8izdlc-dY to view the basics of the game.
- Learn the rules! The Womens’ Flat Track Roller Derby Association (WFTDA) has the current set of rules available for download at their website.
- Watch roller derby! The best way to learn about roller derby is to watch it! Check out our schedule and read up on derby at the Derby News Network.
