WFTDA Wants Your Feedback

WFTDA Fan Survey

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is seeking fan feedback with an online survey. Your opinions and experiences can help WFTDA and OHRG improve the state and direction of roller derby locally in Columbus and throughout the WFTDA member leagues.

Fans and members of non-WFTDA leagues are encouraged to participate. Optionally, you may opt to participate in a drawing to win a gift pack of WFTDA swag.

If you have a few minutes, please fill out the survey.

Ghouls Take Skatemare III

Skatemare is an awesome event because we get to be really competitive against some of our biggest motivators, idols, and opponents—our own teammates. Skatemare is not a sanctioned WFTDA game, meaning that it is basically about having a great time playing roller derby with our awesome home-team crowd cheering us on. Ghostly music was juxtaposed with holiday tunes. About 250 derby fans joined us for viewing the game, many of them new to the raucous game.

We Heart Rookies

After seeing the Whip It movie, a great deal of interest was generated about the Ohio Roller Girls. Tryouts were held this past October and we have ushered in nine skaters into the league.

We would like to extend a big welcome to our 5 newcomers (who will be eligible to select names in the spring) and to three returning skaters, Hell Camino, Mia Slamm and Pam Beastly. They will be working hard in preparation for the 2010 season. We hope you look forward to seeing them on the rink!

OHRG Meet n Greet at SK71

Byline: Loraine Acid

Sunday, Oct. 11 2009 found the Ohio Roller Girls visiting Skate Zone 71, a valued sponsor and the site of many of our derby practices.

Members of OHRG doned their skates and their uniforms to do a meet and greet at Skate Zone 71. There were tables set up with crayons and dress-your-derby-doll coloring pages. Even the skaters had fun sitting around and talking about derby while coloring outfits for their own paper doll.

It was fun to chat with a younger crowd, all of whom obviously liked skating and many of whom were not familiar with roller derby. A background dvd recording of the Ohio Roller Girls’ bout against the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz was playing the entire session.

OHRG hits the highway and leaves it sparkly

Loraine Acid reports on the ongoing Highway Cleanup Project:

Nine A.M. Saturday morning, found a 10-person crew of Ohio Roller Girls skaters and staff gathered outside of the residence of our day’s taskmaster: Hellion BOI. We were all gathered for a good cause; highway-clean-up.

Driving on the stretch of I-70 that is just west of downtown, a green road sign reveals a stretch of highway under the clean-up care of “The Ohio Roller Girls.” It is pretty neat to see the league’s name on an official road sign (and in OHRG colors!). For nearly a year and a half now, OHRG has been a proud participant in the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Adopt-a Highway Program. Our stretch of highway is between the Hague and Broad Street exits on 70 E/W. We are in charge of keeping clean both sides of the freeway which totals to about 2 miles of road.

Tastefully simple offers “all kinds of delicious and easy to prepare products” for food lovers, and most of the products make great gifts as well. Know someone with a birthday coming up? OHRG Safety First: First Aid & CPR

Ohio Roller Girls, Amy Spears, Bratislavia Bruiser, & Kitty Liquorbottom took part in a First Aid & CPR class. The ladies learned basic information to help keep their skaters safe in case of an injury. All bouts are required to have a certified EMT on hand to handle injuries. These ladies joined the other certified skaters as safety personnel to assist injured skaters at practice. We hope they will not have to use their newly learned skills. We are just being prepared.
