Midwest Brewhaha

Do you want more derby action?  Of course you do!  This weekend your Ohio Roller Girls are in Milwaukee Wisconsin for the Midwest Brewhaha!

Can’t make it to Wisonsin for their bouts? No worries all of the action is being streamed live on the Derby New Network.

OHRG is skating at 12:00pm today but be sure to check out all of the exciting bouts!

Welcome New Roller Girls

Recently, the The Ohio Roller Girls held an invite-only tryout and were able to take on five new fresh meat and a transfer skater, Bandersnatch, from Gem City. Bandersnatch will be playing in this weekend’s game against Rubber City. Look for the other new girls to start playing June/July. We are so excited to have them as part of OHRG.
See the information below for open tryouts in June.

Want to Play Roller Derby?
Tryouts for new skaters will be Tuesday June 29 and Wednesday June 30, 2010, from 8-11pm at Skate Zone 71 (4900 Evanswood Drive, Columbus, OH 43229). There will be one more Skate Clinic at Skate Zone 71 on May 25 from 8:30-11pm. We highly recommend going to a clinic before trying out. Click here for Clinic information.

OHRG Volunteers for WCBE Spring Fun Drive

It’s the last day of the WCBE 90.5FM Spring Fundrive, and we hope you have donated your time/money.  WCBE is a new OHRG sponsor for 2010 and some of us have been volunteering during the last week.  If you donated you may have been chatting up one of your favorite skaters!

Our own Ice-G, a new OHRG volunteer, gave us the skinny:

I had the opportunity to help our radio sponsor WCBE 90.5 today and last week during their Spring fund drive. As a member of OHRG’s stats team, I love being part of a group focused on the Central Ohio community. And the community loves OHRG.  Staff and other volunteers at WCBE couldn’t stop talking about derby and our first bout coming up—folks are excited. Plus, great networking to be had. Fundraising professionals gave me advice on our growth efforts, and other wannabes asked me about the next Skate Clinic. It was a blast.

There’s still time to donate, do it now!

Ghouls Take Skatemare III

Skatemare is an awesome event because we get to be really competitive against some of our biggest motivators, idols, and opponents—our own teammates. Skatemare is not a sanctioned WFTDA game, meaning that it is basically about having a great time playing roller derby with our awesome home-team crowd cheering us on. Ghostly music was juxtaposed with holiday tunes. About 250 derby fans joined us for viewing the game, many of them new to the raucous game.

We Heart Rookies

After seeing the Whip It movie, a great deal of interest was generated about the Ohio Roller Girls. Tryouts were held this past October and we have ushered in nine skaters into the league.

We would like to extend a big welcome to our 5 newcomers (who will be eligible to select names in the spring) and to three returning skaters, Hell Camino, Mia Slamm and Pam Beastly. They will be working hard in preparation for the 2010 season. We hope you look forward to seeing them on the rink!

OHRG Meet n Greet at SK71

Byline: Loraine Acid

Sunday, Oct. 11 2009 found the Ohio Roller Girls visiting Skate Zone 71, a valued sponsor and the site of many of our derby practices.

Members of OHRG doned their skates and their uniforms to do a meet and greet at Skate Zone 71. There were tables set up with crayons and dress-your-derby-doll coloring pages. Even the skaters had fun sitting around and talking about derby while coloring outfits for their own paper doll.

It was fun to chat with a younger crowd, all of whom obviously liked skating and many of whom were not familiar with roller derby. A background dvd recording of the Ohio Roller Girls’ bout against the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz was playing the entire session.
